Gaza displacement is getting worse as Israeli forces push Palestinians into ever-smaller areas of the Strip while destroying civilian infrastructure and attacking displacement sites, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) warned on Friday, 30 October 2026, UN News reported.

Gaza displacement near the yellow line
OHCHR said Israel has stated that it aims to increase its area of military deployment to 70 per cent of Gaza’s territory. The shrinking space has caused new displacement next to the “yellow line” demarcation boundary. Over the past two weeks, OHCHR documented the westward expansion of Israeli deployment areas in Al Shujaiyeh in Gaza City and in three places in Middle Gaza: eastern Al Bureij, eastern Deir Al-Balah and eastern Al Maghazi. In Al Shujaiyeh, at least two Israeli attacks were reported on displacement camps, and forces reportedly used explosive robots to blow up the few buildings left standing.

- Stated Israeli aim: deployment over 70% of Gaza (per OHCHR)
- 25 October fire: 200 families, 800 people displaced
- Areas: Al Shujaiyeh, Al Bureij, Deir Al-Balah, Al Maghazi

Al Shujaiyeh tent fire displaced 800 people
OHCHR said it received reports that on 25 October an Israeli drone dropped munitions on tents sheltering displaced families at Al Shujaiyeh junction, and the fire burned for five hours. As a result, 200 families comprising 800 people, mostly women, children and older people, were displaced, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing. “The nightmare of displacement in Gaza is both acute and chronic,” said Ajith Sunghay, Head of UN Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. He said people displaced before the ceasefire have little prospect of returning, as most of their areas lie beyond the yellow line. “And they continue to be displaced again and again,” he said. OHCHR documented these patterns over the two weeks before its 30 October briefing.
What OHCHR wants Israel to do
OHCHR said that as an occupying power, Israel must stop the forcible transfer of Palestinians within Gaza, which it said is a war crime that may also amount to a crime against humanity, and must allow safe and dignified return. It said Israeli forces appear to treat the yellow line as a kill zone, and that Israeli restrictions on shelter aid are making the crisis worse. “This is the fourth year of displacement for most Palestinians in Gaza, the fourth winter in tents too flimsy to withstand the rain,” Sunghay said. These are OHCHR’s findings; the UN News report did not include a response from Israel. OHCHR said Israeli military operations have displaced nearly the entire population of Gaza multiple times, in addition to damaging and destroying buildings, structures and civilian infrastructure.
