What happened at Swavlamban 2026

The two-day seminar, held under the theme “Strength and Power through Innovation and Indigenisation”, brought together the defence forces, industry, start-ups, MSMEs, academia and investors. The first day began with the opening of a technology exhibition and a walkaround by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan. The exhibition covered success stories, maritime surveillance, counter-drone systems, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, NBCD and safety, and efficiency enhancers. Naval and defence attachés were given a presentation and a tour of the exhibits. An interactive session on innovation through self-reliance, moderated by Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, former Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, featured Sridhar Vembu, Nikunj Parashar and Debjani Ghosh.

Rajnath Singh and the iDEX innovators

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was chief guest at the plenary session. He toured the exhibition, reviewed indigenous technologies developed by industry partners and felicitated speakers and iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) innovators, the ministry said. The session saw the release of the Swavlamban 5.0 document and a Compendium of Technology Imperatives, Problem Statements and Future Concepts. On the second day, a session on future and emerging technologies, moderated by Vice Admiral SJ Singh (Retd), former Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, with Ankit Mehta, Rahul Nayar and Saurav Jha as speakers, discussed unmanned systems and AI for multi-domain operations, quantum communication and sensing, and hypersonic technologies. A second session on boosting the iDEX ecosystem was moderated by former Navy chief Admiral KB Singh (Retd), with APVS Prasad, Pankaj Chadha and Prof Manan Suri as speakers. The technology exhibition continued through both days, letting developers meet prospective users and understand the Navy’s operational requirements.

Indian Navy indigenisation: from prototype to production

Speakers stressed the need to streamline systems engineering, testing and certification for unmanned systems, help start-up innovations fit into larger defence platforms, and strengthen indigenous supply chains, the release said. Investors and venture capitalists discussed funding, scaling and commercialisation of homegrown defence technology. The ministry said the deliberations underlined the importance of moving beyond prototypes towards testing, certification, manufacturing, scaling and eventual induction into service. Stronger domestic supply chains, industry-academia collaboration and greater participation of start-ups and MSMEs emerged as key priorities. The Navy said the seminar reaffirmed its commitment to turning homegrown technologies into operational capabilities under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Why It Matters: The seminar sets out the Navy's technology wish-list, which tells Indian start-ups and MSMEs where defence orders are likely to come from.
