What V Srinivas told the MBBS students

Srinivas said medicine is the most unique and highest of professions and demands deep commitment, passion for service and dedication, according to the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). The white coat is not just a garment, he said: thousands of patients see in it their last hope of survival, expertise and relief from pain, and its colour stands for pure intent, clinical precision and transparency. He praised senior and junior resident doctors, saying they often work 48 to 72 hours at a stretch in hospitals without going home. Citing the Charak Shapath, he said Indian medicine has always stressed compassion and selfless service. He said that on wearing the coat, doctors leave personal biases and problems behind and make the patient’s welfare their top priority.

White coat ceremony at RUHS: technology must serve the patient

Srinivas said this is an age of AI, smart classrooms and fully digital government hospitals, but technology should make the patient’s journey through hospital easier, and the patient must stay at the centre of every doctor’s journey. Answering students’ questions, he said there is no shortcut to success and that constant pursuit of excellence and 15 to 20 hours of hard work a day make a great doctor. He advised yoga, mindfulness, the gym, sport and creative hobbies to stay stress-free. He suggested reading The Lancet and National Academy of Medical Sciences publications, and the biography of the noted doctor B Ramamurthi.

Rural health and the cadaveric oath

On rural health, Srinivas said the Ayushman Bharat scheme and state efforts had changed rural infrastructure, with community health centres growing to 100 beds, district hospitals to 500 beds and medical colleges to more than 2,000 beds. He said the young students carry the responsibility of reaching the goals of “Viksit Rajasthan” and “Health for All” by 2047. Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary for Medical Education, congratulated the students and parents, noting that they had cleared the tough NEET (UG) exam. She said that when doctors treat a living person there is no room for multiple choice, so deep study is essential. The cadaveric oath is a pledge of respect taken by first-year students before they begin dissection. Rathore urged students to always remember their parents’ sacrifices and to stand by them in future.

Why It Matters: New MBBS students in Rajasthan will staff the state's expanding hospitals, and the ceremony set out what officials expect from them.
