What INS Tarkash will do in Mauritius

The ministry said the port call reflects the close maritime partnership between India and Mauritius and is an opportunity to strengthen naval cooperation through professional interactions, joint activities and cultural exchanges. During the visit, the ship’s crew will hold a series of engagements with personnel of the Mauritius Coast Guard, including joint training aimed at sharing operational experience and best practices, improving interoperability and strengthening coordination between the two maritime forces. Cultural exchanges and community outreach activities are also planned, giving personnel of the two countries a chance to interact and build closer people-to-people ties. The ministry said the visit will also include joint activities on the professional side, alongside the cultural programme. Mauritius is one of India’s closest maritime partners in the southwestern Indian Ocean.

Aapravasi Diwas on 2 November

INS Tarkash will take part in events marking the 192nd Aapravasi Diwas of Mauritius on 2 November 2026, the release said. The annual observance commemorates the arrival of the first batch of indentured labourers from India at Aapravasi Ghat, Port Louis, on 2 November 1834. The day honours the legacy, sacrifices and contributions of these labourers, whose descendants now form a significant part of the Mauritian population and have contributed to the island nation’s cultural and economic development. The ministry said the ship’s participation underscores the deep historical and cultural links between the two countries. Aapravasi Ghat, the immigration depot where the labourers landed, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; UNESCO says almost half a million indentured labourers arrived there from India between 1834 and 1920, the start of a migration that shaped modern Mauritius.

Indian Navy and the MAHASAGAR vision

The ministry described the port call as an important sign of India’s lasting partnership with Mauritius, built on shared history, cultural affinity and mutual trust. It said the visit also highlights the Indian Navy’s continued engagement with friendly maritime nations in the Indian Ocean Region, contributing to maritime cooperation, regional security and stability. Through such deployments, the Navy said, it continues to strengthen maritime partnerships and advance the vision of MAHASAGAR, or Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions. The visit came a day after the Navy’s First Training Squadron left Colombo, Sri Lanka, following a port call there, according to a separate Defence Ministry release.

Why It Matters: Aapravasi Diwas marks the start of Indian migration to Mauritius in 1834, so the Navy's presence links defence ties with a shared history that matters to millions.
