Stroke affects about 25 lakh Indians a year, says Governor Bagde at neurology conference in Jaipur

About 25 lakh people in India suffer a stroke every year, and it is no longer limited to the elderly, Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde said on Thursday, 29 October 2026, as he inaugurated the 33rd annual conference of the Indian Academy of Neurology in Jaipur, according to DIPR.

Governor on stroke among young people

Bagde said stroke is rising quickly among young people too because of poor lifestyle. He said the human brain and nervous system are among the most complex structures in human life, so neurological diseases affect not only the patient but also the family and the wider community. Discussing conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, he urged doctors to spread awareness about timely diagnosis, specialist treatment, continuous research and sensitive, humane care for neurological disorders. A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or a blood vessel in the brain bursts, cutting off oxygen to brain cells. Bagde said stress from modern lifestyles and hectic routines is a major cause of neurological diseases.

Taking neurology care to rural Rajasthan

Bagde asked the senior doctors at the conference to consider how facilities for treating complex diseases can be extended to remote rural areas, and to make sure that no patient in the state is left without treatment. Doctors and public health agencies advise that stroke is a medical emergency: sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the body, drooping of the face, or difficulty speaking are warning signs, and patients should reach a hospital with stroke care as quickly as possible, because some treatments work only within a few hours of onset. Anyone who notices these signs in another person should call an ambulance at once rather than wait for symptoms to pass. Controlling blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, avoiding tobacco and staying active lower the risk, according to India’s National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.

Why It Matters: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability, and faster treatment in district hospitals can save lives in rural Rajasthan.
