What the Governor said on Rajasthan milk production

The Governor said animal husbandry is a major base of India’s rural economy, national income and employment. He praised the state’s Mukhyamantri Dugdh Sambal Yojana for livestock farmers and the expansion of Saras dairy, and said Rajasthan should also lead the country in veterinary care and livestock protection. He called for joint work to raise milk output by giving animals a scientifically balanced diet and taking proper care of their health and breed. Mr Bagde said milk is widely used to make sweets and that sweets from Rajasthan are also exported abroad. He described the contribution of small farmers and poor families to milk production as important and said more should be done to encourage them.

Key Facts

  • Speaker: Governor Haribhau Bagde
  • Venue: veterinary and animal sciences university, Jobner
  • Theme: “Veterinary Medicine in the Digital Era”
  • Claim: Rajasthan second in milk production
  • Pashu Aadhaar: 12-digit ID for 35 crore+ animals

Indigenous livestock and veterinary medicine in the digital era

The national symposium was on the theme “Veterinary Medicine in the Digital Era”. The Governor called it important in the light of sustainable development of animal health in the age of artificial intelligence. He said it is a big thing that Rajasthan has the largest indigenous livestock population in the country, and named Rathi and Tharparkar cows as important breeds whose milk, he said, is of better quality than that of cows from outside. Diagnosing disease in animals is harder than in humans, he said, because a person can describe pain while an animal cannot, which makes the role of veterinarians more important. He urged vets to stay humane in treatment and to work on improving animals’ disease resistance.

Pashu Aadhaar for 35 crore animals

Referring to the Centre’s national digital livestock initiative, Mr Bagde said it is no less than a boon for livestock owners. Under it, more than 35 crore animals in the country are being given a unique 12-digit “Pashu Aadhaar” identity, which he said is very useful for keeping each animal’s complete health and vaccination record. He asked veterinarians to combine traditional methods of diagnosis with modern medicine to help protect livestock. Before his address, the Governor honoured people who have made notable contributions to veterinary medicine and animal science. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tribhuvan Sharma gave details of the national symposium, the release said. The release did not give the state’s latest milk output in litres or tonnes. DIPR issued the release in Hindi; this report is a translation.

Why It Matters: Dairy is a key source of income for rural families in Rajasthan, and digital animal IDs and better vet care can help farmers track vaccinations and reduce losses from disease.
