How the Vigilance Awareness Week walk was held

BEML, a defence public sector undertaking that makes mining, construction, defence and rail products, organised the walkathon with the Vigilance Study Circle, Bengaluru, in line with directions from the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). Participants gathered at the entrance of the historic Kanteerava Stadium. They came from BEML, HAL, BEL, ITI Limited, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation, Canara Bank and other bodies, and included Chief Vigilance Officers, directors and senior officers. Dr Sajid Farid Shapoo, IPS, BEML’s Chief Vigilance Officer, and other CVOs and directors flagged off the walk with chequered flags. Walkers went around the stadium and along nearby main roads carrying banners and placards. The release described BEML as a leading defence public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence and said the walk was held in accordance with CVC directives for the week.

Slogans and a focus on complaints

Participants raised slogans such as “I Am Against Corruption – Are You?” and “Probity for Prosperity”, the release said. A key theme this year was the importance of complaints. Pamphlets titled “Why Complaints Matter and Two Safe Ways to Complain” were handed out to the public along the route. They explained complaining to the Chief Vigilance Officer and complaining under the PIDPI resolution, the Public Interest Disclosure and Protection of Informers rule, which protects the identity of the person who complains. Volunteers spoke with morning walkers, young people and other residents, explaining that a complaint is not only a way to raise a grievance but also a tool for improving systems. The release said volunteers and officers handed out the pamphlets to people along the walk route.

BEML CVO on shared responsibility

The event sent the message that vigilance is a shared responsibility that needs institutions, employees and citizens to take part, according to the ministry. Addressing the gathering at the end, Dr Shapoo said Vigilance Awareness Week is not merely a ritual observance, the release said. The walkathon brought public sector organisations together to promote integrity, transparency and accountability in public life, which the release called the core principles of the week. The CVC asks central government organisations and public sector bodies to hold outreach events every year during the week. The release did not give the full programme of other events BEML has planned for the rest of the week.

Why It Matters: Knowing safe, identity-protected ways to report corruption makes it easier for citizens and employees to speak up.
