Taiz City cut off for 20 days as UN warns of water and food crisis in Yemen

Taiz City in Yemen has been cut off for 20 days, UN aid agencies warned on Friday, 23 October 2026, describing a fast-developing humanitarian emergency as fighting blocks food, fuel and water from reaching residents.

Why Taiz City is cut off

UN News said the city has been encircled by de facto Houthi forces fighting government troops along Yemen’s west coast. Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the UN aid coordination office OCHA, said the fighting made it impossible for agencies to get in and for people to get out. Access roads have been cut, so very little fuel, food or other supplies have reached the city. The escalation between the Houthis and the Aden-based Government began in early September, ending the relative calm brought by a 2022 truce. Laerke said water production in the city has fallen by about half because diesel for delivery trucks is scarce, and the cost of truck water has roughly tripled. He told journalists in Geneva that the situation inside the city was worsening as the siege continued.

Key Facts

  • Days cut off: 20 (as of 23 Oct)
  • People cut off from aid in Taiz: 800,000+
  • Children acutely malnourished in Taiz this year: 52,000+
  • Displaced, 7 Jun to 19 Oct: about 258,679
  • Water output: down by about half; truck water price roughly tripled

“It's 20 days and counting since Taiz has been cut off.”

Yemen hunger: WFP and UNICEF figures

The World Food Programme (WFP) said more than 800,000 people in Taiz have been cut off from assistance, including 600,000 who depend on humanitarian aid and 200,000 women and children. WFP spokesperson Azfar Deen said the agency is trying hard to regain access. UNICEF said it has screened more than 168,000 children in Taiz this year and found more than 52,000 acutely malnourished, including more than 11,500 with severe acute malnutrition. It has pre-positioned nearly 8,000 cartons of ready-to-use therapeutic food across Taiz governorate, enough for about three months. Spokesperson Ricardo Pires warned that access constraints make it harder to move supplies and for families to reach treatment. WFP said it continues to support wider operations across Yemen while it seeks to regain access to Taiz.

Displacement and the wider toll

The UN migration agency IOM recorded about 258,679 displaced people between 7 June and 19 October 2026, most of them in Taiz and Lahj governorates, UN News said. Many families have moved repeatedly and are seeking refuge in already overstretched sites and host communities. As of 17 October, 3,836 Yemeni nationals had arrived in Djibouti, reportedly fleeing the worsening security situation. UN News also cited reports that at least 1,574 people have been killed and 6,939 injured in the conflict since August. Most residents of Taiz depend on water delivered by trucks, which is why the fuel shortage has hit supplies so hard. UNICEF said its nutrition stocks in Taiz are sufficient for about three months.

Why It Matters: When roads close, a city that relies on trucked water and aid quickly faces thirst and hunger, and children with severe malnutrition are most at risk.
