Mr Sivakumar attended the inaugural session and events linked to the KatHABI ASEAN Silk Expo, the SEDA Pilipinas Consortium Meeting and the Silk Farmers and Weavers’ Forum. He outlined Ministry of Textiles schemes to empower the silk community, raise stakeholder awareness and strengthen the sericulture value chain. He also shared plans for the development and value addition of diverse textile fibres, stressing research, technology and sustainable practices. Plenary sessions on ‘Global Silk Connection’ and ‘Advancing Cross-Sector Partnerships’ gave a platform for talks on international cooperation and innovation across the silk sector, PIB said.

Central Silk Board talks on India-Philippines trade

On 23 October, Mr Sivakumar met fibre and textile industry stakeholders at DOST-PTRI in Bicutan, Taguig City, to explore trade partnerships and commercial ties between India and the Philippines, PIB said. The programme included meetings with the Ambassador of India, representatives of I-WE and garment importers associated with FICCI-Phil. Discussions involved the founders of AbacaTek, the CEO of CKDiaz Worldwide Enterprise and DOST-PTRI officials. He also held sideline meetings with Dr Anthony C. Sales, Regional Director of DOST Region XI, and Dr Carlos C. Tomboc, former Director of DOST-PTRI. The ministry said the engagements helped identify areas for trade and investment and strengthen industry links. PIB said India has a well-established sericulture ecosystem backed by the Central Silk Board’s network of research and training institutes.

Why It Matters: Hosting the world sericulture congress gives India a platform to showcase its silk sector and attract research and trade partners.
