Why the Shekhawati Heritage Meet is being held

The Chief Minister was speaking at the Shekhawati Virasat evam Vikas Summit (heritage and development summit) in Jaipur. He said the aim of the 8 December meet is to link migrants from Shekhawati with heritage conservation, tourism development and investment opportunities in their home region. He called Shekhawati’s bravery, folk culture and historical heritage a proud part of Rajasthan’s identity, and said its historic havelis and religious sites are a priceless legacy that must be protected for future generations. In line with the Prime Minister’s idea of “development as well as heritage”, he said, the state is conserving this legacy and linking it with tourism to create jobs. He urged entrepreneurs to connect the new generation with business and industry, saying the hard work, skill and enterprise of Rajasthanis are recognised across the world.

662 Shekhawati havelis and a heritage tourism circuit

According to the release, the state government is working to conserve 662 havelis in the Shekhawati region, and a heritage tourism circuit covering Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu is being developed. The government wants to protect the original form and traditional paintings of the havelis while bringing them into tourism. Local artists and craftspeople who do mural painting and traditional crafts will receive skills training and be linked to the effort, which the Chief Minister said will save the art and create jobs for young people. He said the region’s havelis offer large scope for hotels and tourism, and asked residents to take an active part in protecting their heritage.

Water, roads and investment for the region

Mr Sharma said water is Rajasthan’s biggest need. Under the Ram Jal Setu Link Project, he said, works worth about Rs 41,000 crore have started out of roughly Rs 1 lakh crore of proposed works, and the Yamuna water agreement is meant to meet the needs of Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu. He listed the Kotputli-Kishangarh greenfield expressway and the Bikaner-Kotputli expressway as projects that will connect the three districts directly to the national highway network. Of about Rs 35 lakh crore in investment agreements signed at the Rising Rajasthan summit, he said, groundbreaking has been done for more than Rs 9 lakh crore. MLA Gopal Sharma and Shekhawati Foundation president Vinod Goyal were among those present. He also said migrants, donors and social organisations have played their part in the state’s Karmabhoomi se Matribhoomi campaign.

Why It Matters: The painted havelis of Shekhawati are a major tourism draw, and getting migrant families to invest could save buildings that are falling into ruin.
