Haiti hunger set to hit record 6.35 million people by mid-2027, WFP warns

Haiti hunger is on track to reach record levels, with 6.35 million people likely to face acute food insecurity from March to June 2027, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) said in a release dated 28 October 2026, citing the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis.

IPC analysis on Haiti hunger

The projected figure is more than half a million higher than for the same period in 2026, WFP said. Almost two million of these people are likely to face Emergency (IPC 4) levels of hunger, meaning severe food shortages that may force extreme measures to meet basic needs. The IPC snapshot says more than 5.94 million people, about one in two Haitians, already face high levels of acute food insecurity between September 2026 and February 2027, and that 6.35 million would be 57 per cent of the population analysed. WFP said violence, economic instability, poor harvests, displacement and the growing impact of El Nino are driving the outlook.

Key Facts

  • Projected acute hunger (Mar-Jun 2027): 6.35 million, a record
  • In Emergency (IPC 4): almost 2 million
  • Now (Sept 2026-Feb 2027): over 5.94 million
  • Displaced: more than 1.5 million Haitians
  • WFP funding need: $78 million to March

“Many have been displaced multiple times and are arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs.”

— Lauren Landis, WFP Country Director in Haiti

Displacement and El Nino hit food supplies

More than 1.5 million Haitians have been forced from their homes, WFP said, and people in areas controlled by armed groups or in displacement sites are particularly vulnerable. “Our teams are witnessing increasing levels of desperation as violence continues to displace families,” said Lauren Landis, WFP Country Director in Haiti. “Many have been displaced multiple times and are arriving with nothing but the clothes on their backs.” Several rural areas are expected to slide from Crisis (IPC 3) to Emergency (IPC 4) between March and June 2027, as El Nino causes droughts and floods that cut harvests. Armed groups are also disrupting farm and market supply chains. The IPC snapshot put inflation at 17 per cent year-on-year in August 2026, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization said violence is limiting access to markets, land and farm inputs.

WFP needs $78 million to keep helping

So far this year, WFP has worked with the government to support 2.6 million Haitians with emergency food and cash, school meals, social protection and malnutrition prevention for young children, it said. Seventy-four per cent of school meals are made with food grown by local farmers. WFP also supports anticipatory cash transfers, repairs to water infrastructure and rural roads, and micro-insurance that protects farmers against crop losses. The agency urgently needs $78 million to sustain these operations through March. UN News reported on 29 October that Haiti’s humanitarian response plan remains less than half funded. “This multifaceted crisis reminds us how important it is to not just provide life-saving emergency food assistance, but also to scale up longer-term investments,” Landis said.

Why It Matters: More than half of Haiti's people are going hungry, and aid agencies say the gap can only be closed with new funding.
