Nyala drone attack: five children killed at Sudan market, UNICEF says

A Nyala drone attack on a market in Sudan’s South Darfur state killed at least five children and injured two others on Monday, 26 October, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Thursday, 29 October 2026.

Who was killed in the Nyala drone attack

The victims were three boys and two girls aged between seven and 14, according to Etleva Kadilli, UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa. The attack came a week after armed drone strikes reportedly killed at least 80 people, including women and children, in a busy market in Abyei, UN News said. “Markets are places where families buy food and people work to make a living. A trip to the market should never cost a child their life,” Kadilli said. Nyala is the capital of South Darfur.

UNICEF: more than 400 children killed or injured in Sudan this year

More than 400 children were reported killed or injured in Sudan between January and September this year, and armed drone attacks caused a significant share of these casualties, UNICEF said. Drone strikes have also damaged homes, schools, health facilities, water systems and markets. “For children in Sudan, even the most ordinary parts of daily life are becoming increasingly dangerous,” Kadilli said. “After more than three years of conflict, children in Sudan need greater protection from violence, not new ways for the conflict to reach them. The killing and injuring of children must end.” The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023. Earlier this week, UN investigators said civilians in El Obeid were trapped between drone strikes and mass arrests, and UN human rights chief Volker Turk condemned drone strikes that killed at least 306 people across Sudan in the first three weeks of October.

Haiti hunger warning from FAO and WFP

In the same UN News briefing, the Food and Agriculture Organization warned that more than 5.9 million people in Haiti face high levels of acute food insecurity, more than one in two people, driven by violent insecurity and this year’s strong El Nino. “The issues around violence are impacting people’s access to markets, access to their land, access to agricultural inputs,” said Rein Paulsen, Director of FAO’s Office of Emergencies and Resilience. Inflation of about 17 per cent is eroding purchasing power. The World Food Programme warned that acute hunger is on track to reach record levels, with some 6.35 million people projected to face acute food insecurity between March and June next year. WFP has supported 2.6 million people so far in 2026 and needs $78 million to sustain operations through March, UN News said.

Why It Matters: Drone strikes on markets are now a leading cause of child casualties in Sudan, where the war has created one of the world's largest humanitarian crises.
