Yemen displacement has risen to more than 280,000 people, and many vulnerable people cannot reach life-saving relief because it is too dangerous, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said on Friday, 30 October 2026, UN News reported.

Yemen displacement and refugees at risk
UNHCR described a rapidly worsening crisis for more than 65,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen, as “escalating insecurity, economic collapse, depleting resources and severe humanitarian access constraints leave tens of thousands with nowhere to turn”. Fighting between Houthi forces and government forces escalated last month and ended a four-year ceasefire, UN News said. Despite this, thousands of people continue to risk dangerous sea crossings from the Horn of Africa to Yemen, said UNHCR spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh. In its alert, UNHCR said refugees and asylum seekers were struggling to survive. “When access allows, we do move in that assistance, but it has been challenging,” Saltmarsh said, adding that many displaced people had been unable to reach places where supplies were available.
Key Facts
- Displaced by fighting: over 280,000
- Refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen: over 65,000
- Kharaz camp: about 9,500 refugees (Somalia, Ethiopia)
- UNHCR Yemen appeal: 19% funded
- Relief en route: 11 containers, 3,000 kits
Kharaz refugee camp near the front line in Lahj
Aid teams are particularly worried about Kharaz refugee camp in the southwestern governorate of Lahj, close to the front line. The camp shelters about 9,500 refugees from Somalia and Ethiopia in a government-controlled area. No refugee casualties have been verified so far, but “nearby shelling has disrupted services and led to movement restrictions”, Saltmarsh said. UNHCR partners have distributed food inside the camp with local authorities, and health and water services continue with great difficulty. Most other services are on hold, with schools suspended, legal and documentation services interrupted and rising fuel and food prices making it harder for refugees to meet basic needs. The figure of 280,000 displaced comes from UNHCR, which said humanitarian needs have grown significantly since the fighting escalated.
UNHCR appeal only 19 per cent funded
UN News said the rise in needs has coincided with severe supply chain shocks in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab El-Mandeb Strait linked to the US-Iran war, while resources are falling short; UNHCR’s appeal for Yemen is only 19 per cent funded. In a positive step, the agency said it had secured free transport for 11 containers of emergency relief items from Dubai to Yemen. “Those 11 containers should arrive tomorrow, bringing 3,000 relief kits to over 20,000 people in Yemen,” Saltmarsh said. He warned that UNHCR operations in Sudan, Djibouti and Ethiopia are among the most exposed to disrupted Red Sea shipping. Saltmarsh said shifting security conditions and logistical constraints were challenging those delivery efforts.
