Vote Baraat in Bikaner: a 630-metre turban and a mock wedding procession urge villagers to vote

Editor's note: TrendDesh has covered the Rajasthan panchayat election schedule and phase 1 arrangements. This report covers a voter awareness drive in Bikaner on 21 October.

A “Vote Baraat“, described by officials as a first for a panchayat election in Rajasthan, wound through villages in Bikaner district on 21 October 2026, with a bride and groom, hundreds of turbaned “baratis” and drums carrying a message to vote, the state’s DIPR said. Its centrepiece was a 630-metre turban bearing a voter awareness slogan.

How the Vote Baraat went through Rojha and Sahniwala

The procession was organised by the district election office’s SVEEP cell with the Pandit Ji Foundation for Cultural Heritage Trust, on the orders of District Election Officer Nishant Jain and under the guidance of SVEEP in-charge and Zila Parishad CEO Shailja Pandey, DIPR said. It set off from the trust’s office with drums and moved through main roads towards Rojha, Phooldesar and Sahniwala, ending with a meeting at the main taxi stand. Participants in traditional Rajasthani dress carried slogans on voting. SVEEP co-in-charge and PRO Suresh Bishnoi said the aim was to present voting not as a formality but as a festival of democracy. Participants dressed as a bride and groom led the procession, while baratis in colourful safas carried voting slogans that drew villagers’ attention, the release said.

630-metre turban links culture with voter awareness

Displaying the slogan on the 630-metre turban was the main attraction, using Rajasthan’s cultural heritage and the traditional pagdi as a tool for democratic awareness, according to the release. SVEEP coordinator Prashant Joshi told the gathering that every voter should use their franchise in the coming panchayat election to strengthen democracy, and co-coordinator Gopal Joshi administered a pledge to vote. Trust founder Swaroop Pancharia said voting is a right and also a responsibility. Hundreds of villagers took part, and the event was chaired by Ishwarlal Pancharia. SVEEP representatives Sudhir Kumar Mishra, Prabhat Padihar, Kiran Sharma and Mohan Chopra were also part of the event.

Rajasthan Panchayat Election in Bikaner

The drive came on the eve of phase 1 polling. DIPR separately reported that polling parties for the first phase left on 21 October in Bikaner in the presence of District Election Officer Nishant Jain, and that an observer, Navneet Kumar, inspected polling stations in the district. TrendDesh reported earlier that the Rajasthan panchayat elections are being held in three phases. Voters elect members of zila parishads and panchayat samitis as well as sarpanches and ward panches. Officials across districts have run SVEEP activities such as rallies, pledges and programmes in schools and factories to raise turnout. SVEEP stands for Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation, the Election Commission’s voter outreach programme that districts use for such drives.

Why It Matters: Turnout in local body polls depends on rural voters, and drives that use familiar wedding customs are meant to make the message stick in villages.
