Taiz cut off as Yemen fighting forces more than 250,000 people from their homes, UN warns

Taiz, in southwestern Yemen, is at the centre of a new humanitarian emergency after renewed fighting forced more than 250,000 people from their homes, the United Nations said on 20 October 2026. About half of those recently uprooted have sought shelter in Taiz city and the wider governorate, where aid access is “essentially blocked”, UN News reported.

Houthis close the only road linking Taiz and Aden

UN human rights chief Volker Türk said the Houthis’ closure of the only supply route linking Taiz to Aden is placing civilians at grave risk, blocking humanitarian aid and cutting off essential supplies. He appealed to Houthi fighters, who he said had encircled Taiz city, to let aid in immediately. Türk said 32 civilians have been confirmed killed across the governorate, including 14 children and nine women, and warned of a sharp rise in the risk of death and injury as fighting moves closer to densely populated parts of the city. The violence follows the resumption last month of clashes between Houthi fighters, formally known as Ansar Allah, and the internationally recognised government based in Aden, ending the relative calm of the 2022 truce.

Key Facts

  • Displaced by renewed fighting: more than 250,000
  • Civilians confirmed killed in Taiz governorate: 32, including 14 children and nine women
  • Hospitals: 12 in Taiz with about four days of fuel
  • Medicines: 115 of 127 essential medicines at a week or less
  • Refugees in Yemen needing support: about 65,000

“Taiz is certainly the number one concern at the moment in an ocean of concerns.”

UNICEF says families arrive with nothing

“Taiz is certainly the number one concern at the moment in an ocean of concerns,” said Akhil Iyer, UNICEF’s Representative in Yemen. Many people have fled repeatedly and are arriving in overcrowded camps or communities with little or no food, and clean water is almost non-existent, he said. According to the World Food Programme, wheat flour stocks in affected areas of Taiz are nearly exhausted, in a governorate where 10 of 16 districts were already classified at emergency levels of food insecurity. Briefing from Aden, Iyer said garbage is piling up in Taiz city as sanitation services halt, and that diesel needed to run water pumping stations is running short. UNICEF had pre-positioned ready-to-use therapeutic food before the escalation, but it cannot reach health facilities because all the routes are closed.

Hospitals running out of fuel and medicines

World Health Organization spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said 12 hospitals in Taiz had about four days of fuel left, oxygen cylinders were in daily deficit, and 115 of 127 essential medicines had stocks for about a week or less. The UN warned that the situation could turn into an even more acute health emergency in a country already facing cholera and measles outbreaks along with suspected diphtheria and dengue. Matthew Saltmarsh of the UN refugee agency UNHCR said access problems were stopping aid teams from reaching those most in need, although protection work continues where access allows. He added that some 65,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in Yemen, most of them from Somalia and Ethiopia, also urgently need support. UN agencies called on all parties to protect civilians, water systems and health facilities and to let aid through.

Why It Matters: Taiz governorate was already among Yemen's hungriest areas. With its only road to Aden shut and hospital fuel down to days, the UN says aid access is now a matter of life and death.
