Curiosity rover photographs Martian dawn over wind-carved yardang cliffs on Mount Sharp

NASA’s Curiosity rover has captured dawn breaking over distant, wind-carved Martian cliffs, and NASA picked a close-up from the panorama as its Image of the Day on 19 October 2026. The view, released on 6 October, is the most detailed yet of the crags known as yardangs that the mission’s scientists have long waited to see up close.

How the Curiosity rover made the dawn panorama

The scene was taken at 8:30 a.m. local Mars time on 11 August 2026, the 4,982nd Martian day, or sol, of the mission, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said. Curiosity’s Mastcam took six images that were stitched together after being sent to Earth. Unlike most Mastcam images, this one was processed without white balancing, which keeps the early morning look, with striking blue hues in the foreground and bright light on the cliffs on the horizon. Mastcam was built and is operated by Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, while JPL, managed by Caltech, built the rover and leads the mission.

  • Yardang layer: about 16 km across Mount Sharp
  • Target: reach the base of the yardangs in 2027

“No one is sure exactly what created this layer.”

Yardangs and the puzzle of Mount Sharp

Yardangs are elongated ridges shaped by wind erosion. The yardang layer stretches about 16 kilometres across the north-western reaches of Mount Sharp, a 5-kilometre-tall mountain that Curiosity has been climbing since 2014. The rover recently passed 1 kilometre of elevation gain, the most ever climbed on Mars. Mount Sharp is built of layers, each recording a period of Martian history, and they have told scientists about lakes and streams that covered the area billions of years ago. When the water dried up it left salty minerals behind, and after new material stopped settling on the mountain, wind may have stripped some of it away to form the yardangs. In the part of the mountain’s shoulder where the rover is climbing, the stack of layers ends with the yardang layer, NASA’s Photojournal says. Before it was laid down, Mount Sharp may have begun eroding, leaving a gap in the otherwise continuous climate record that Curiosity has been reading.

NASA JPL scientists plan to reach the cliffs in 2027

“The yardang layer looks out of place. It’s the wrong color, the layers tilt at an odd angle, and it almost appears plastered on,” said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity project scientist at JPL. “No one is sure exactly what created this layer, but one idea is it may be ash deposited by ancient volcanic eruptions.” Curiosity is in the second year of its fifth extended mission and will spend much of the next year driving through layers rich in sulfates and carbonates, both signs of ancient drying. Sometime in 2027, scientists hope to reach the base of the yardangs, where the rover’s robotic arm can collect one-of-a-kind data on how they formed.

Why It Matters: The yardang layer caps the rock record Curiosity has been reading for a decade. Learning how it formed could show what happened to Mars as its water vanished.
