Gaza food aid cut by a third as WFP funding shortfall hits 500,000 people before winter

Gaza food aid from the World Food Programme (WFP) is being cut by roughly a third because of funding shortages, a move that will affect some 500,000 people as winter approaches, the UN agency announced on 19 October 2026, UN News reported. WFP is supporting 1.1 million of the most vulnerable people this month, down from 1.6 million in September.

How the Gaza food aid cuts work

Rations have been cut in half, so families now receive one food parcel instead of two and a smaller bag of wheat flour. The value of cash assistance to 75,000 families has also been reduced, and the number of hot meals handed out daily across Gaza will drop from 250,000 to 150,000. “Families living in hard-to-reach areas, including near the ‘yellow line’ of Israeli military control, will receive a hot meal every other day instead of daily,” WFP said. For now, it can still support bakeries covering a third of Gaza’s bread needs, give nutrition aid to 300,000 women and children and provide school snacks to 200,000 students.

Key Facts

  • Cut: about one third, affecting some 500,000 people
  • People reached: 1.1 million in October, down from 1.6 million
  • Hot meals: down from 250,000 to 150,000 a day
  • Acute food insecurity: 67% (about 1.4 million people)
  • Funding need: $450 million through March

Food insecurity eased since the ceasefire, but gains are fragile

WFP said its aid has been a lifeline for up to 90 per cent of families in Gaza over the past three years. Since the October 2025 ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, its teams have reached about 1.6 million people a month with food parcels, flour, bread, hot meals, nutrition support, school snacks and cash. About 67 per cent of Gazans, an estimated 1.4 million people, face acute food insecurity at crisis levels or worse, down from 77 per cent at the end of 2025. Some 200,000 people remain in emergency conditions. More than 80 per cent of the population is unemployed, and only one in five children eats a sufficiently diverse diet. “Improved humanitarian access and delivery of assistance since October 2025 have helped reduce food insecurity, but these gains remain fragile and could quickly be reversed if humanitarian funding continues to decline,” the agency warned.

West Bank cuts and a $450 million appeal

Funding for WFP’s operations in Palestine in 2026 is less than half of what it received in previous years, and the agency urgently needs $450 million to keep critical work going in Gaza and the West Bank through March. In the West Bank, the number of people receiving WFP help was already cut by half in September, from 400,000 to 200,000. WFP said more resources are needed for emergency food aid, engineering support and to prevent malnutrition among young children and pregnant and breastfeeding women as winter sets in.

Why It Matters: Hunger in Gaza had eased since the ceasefire. WFP warns those gains can reverse quickly if aid shrinks as winter flooding and cold set in.
