Key Facts

  • Opened by: R. Venkataramani, Attorney General for India
  • Name: Tiruppur Kumaran Student Service Centre (TKSSC)
  • Amphitheatre: about 500 seats, with stage
  • Offices: Chief Warden, Placement Cell, Dean of Students’ Welfare, Proctorial Board and about a dozen cells
  • Location: opposite the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium on campus

Why the centre honours Tiruppur Kumaran

Tiruppur Kumaran was a freedom fighter from Erode in Tamil Nadu who founded the Desa Bandhu Youth Association and took part in protests against British rule. He died at the age of 28 on 11 January 1932 after being injured in a police assault on the banks of the Noyyal River in Tiruppur during a protest march. He was holding the Indian national flag, which the British had banned, when he fell, which earned him the Tamil title “Kodi Kaatha Kumaran”, or “Kumaran who protected the flag”. India Post issued a commemorative stamp in his honour in October 2004 to mark his birth centenary. The release also noted that he came from the native place of Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan.

Student services, a 500-seat amphitheatre and a seminar hall

The centre stands opposite the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium on the campus and is meant to be a single point of contact for students from admission and enrolment through to graduation, placements and alumni engagement. The Office of the Chief Warden, the Placement Cell, the Dean of Students’ Welfare, the Proctorial Board and nearly a dozen other student-support cells now work from the building. It also has a semi-closed amphitheatre with a stage and seating for about 500 people for gatherings, meetings and cultural programmes, two food outlets around the amphitheatre, and a mini round-table seminar hall for meetings and academic discussions. The university said the aim is a supportive, inclusive and safe campus that also promotes mental well-being, employability and leadership among students.

Why It Matters: Students usually have to visit many offices for hostels, placements and grievances. A single centre saves time and makes support easier to find, especially for new and outstation students.
