Iceland storm: NASA image shows Hurricane Isaias remnants turn into a powerful cyclone

An Iceland storm formed from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias brushed past the country on 14 October 2026, and NASA’s Earth Observatory published a satellite image of the system on 21 October. The NOAA-21 satellite captured the comma-shaped cyclone as it grazed Iceland’s coast.

From Hurricane Isaias to an extratropical cyclone

Isaias, the only Atlantic hurricane so far in 2026, made landfall in Florida as a Category 2 storm on 9 October, NASA said. After lashing the U.S. Gulf Coast and drenching much of the Eastern Seaboard, its remnants rode the jet stream east over the North Atlantic and grew into an extratropical cyclone. Such low-pressure systems often have lopsided, comma-shaped cloud patterns and can bring hurricane-force winds, rain and blizzard-like conditions. NASA noted that these storms can be as damaging as hurricanes even though they form outside the tropics.

Key Facts

  • Storm origin: remnants of Hurricane Isaias
  • Image date: 14 October 2026 (NOAA-21 VIIRS)
  • Pressure drop: 50+ hPa in 24 hours
  • Peak gust: 205 km/h near Eyjafjallajokull
  • Possible record: October low pressure in Iceland since 1963

Iceland storm winds and a possible pressure record

The storm’s air pressure fell by more than 50 hectopascals in 24 hours, according to reports cited by NASA, about double the threshold for explosive cyclogenesis, or bombogenesis. Some meteorologists believe it may have set a new October low for barometric pressure in Iceland after correcting for altitude, likely breaking a record from 1963, NASA said. A gust of 205 km/h was recorded near Eyjafjallajokull volcano in the south, and a small island offshore saw sustained winds of 150 km/h. Damaging winds reached the north, where people prepared for sleet and snow. NOAA describes bombogenesis as a rapid drop in central pressure of at least 24 millibars (24 hectopascals) in 24 hours, so a fall of more than 50 is about twice that. Eyjafjallajokull is the volcano whose 2010 eruption grounded flights across Europe.

NASA Earth Observatory and NOAA-21 imagery

The image was taken by the VIIRS instrument on the NOAA-21 satellite on the afternoon of 14 October and processed by NASA Earth Observatory’s Michala Garrison; the story was written by Lindsey Doermann. Across the Atlantic, north-western Scotland saw gusts of up to 90 km/h that day, according to news reports cited by NASA, leading to the cancellation of several ferry routes. NASA listed sources including the CIMSS satellite blog, NOAA’s National Ocean Service and Iceland’s broadcaster RUV. VIIRS images Earth in visible and infrared light, which lets scientists see the structure of storms like this one as they cross the ocean. Isaias made landfall in Florida on 9 October, so its remnants crossed the Atlantic in about five days before reaching Iceland. NASA Earth Observatory published the image and story on 21 October 2026.

Why It Matters: The storm shows how hurricane remnants can turn into strong winter-type cyclones far from the tropics, which forecasters across the North Atlantic have to track.
