Ebola in Nigeria: WHO steps in after first Bundibugyo case confirmed in Abuja

Editor's note: TrendDesh has followed the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, including Kenya's cases and WHO readiness work. This report covers the first confirmed case in Nigeria.

Ebola in Nigeria has been confirmed for the first time in the current outbreak, with a woman who recently travelled from Uganda testing positive for Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease in Abuja, the World Health Organization said on 21 October 2026, according to UN News. WHO is helping Nigerian health authorities with the response.

How the first case of Ebola in Nigeria was found

The patient began showing symptoms on 7 October, four days after she arrived in Nigeria, WHO said. She sought care at a private health facility in the capital, Abuja, on 11 October, and laboratory testing confirmed the diagnosis on 20 October. She remains in isolation and is receiving care while investigators work out the likely source of infection and rebuild her full travel and exposure history. Nigerian authorities have identified 44 contacts who are being monitored, and infection prevention and control measures are being stepped up at the private facility where she was treated. The infection was confirmed by laboratory tests nine days after she first sought care.

Bundibugyo virus spread beyond DR Congo

Nigeria is the fifth country to detect Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease since an outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in mid-May, WHO said. The DRC outbreak is the deadliest in that country’s history, with more than 9,500 cases and more than 4,200 deaths recorded as of 18 October, according to Congolese health authorities. Uganda faced a deadly outbreak that was declared over in late August, while nine cases have been reported in Kenya and one in the Netherlands, all linked to the DRC. UN News said there is currently no vaccine for this virus.

WHO advice on contact tracing and travel

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has activated its incident management system, WHO said. The agency stressed that quick identification of cases, timely follow-up of contacts and strong infection control are critical to stop the virus spreading. WHO and partners are supporting case investigation, contact tracing and infection control, and are supplying personal protective equipment for health workers. WHO advised countries in the region to stay highly prepared, keep disease surveillance strong and make sure laboratories can safely test suspected cases. It has not recommended any restrictions on travel or trade with affected countries. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of infected people. Bundibugyo is one of the species of Ebola virus and is named after the district in Uganda where it was first identified in 2007, according to WHO.

Why It Matters: Nigeria is Africa's most populous country and a major travel hub, so containing a single imported case quickly is key to stopping wider spread in West Africa.
