Bastar flood relief: NMDC to give 1,000 tarpaulins to families along Indravati river

State miner NMDC is distributing about 1,000 tarpaulins to families hit by the Bastar flood in September 2026, as it supports the district administration’s rehabilitation work, the Ministry of Mines said on 29 October 2026.

What the Bastar flood damaged

Severe flooding in September caused extensive waterlogging in villages along the Indravati river and damaged many mud houses, according to PIB Raipur. The 18×24 ft tarpaulins are meant to give temporary shelter to families whose homes were damaged. During the floods, NMDC provided four speed boats to the district administration, which were used to rescue stranded villagers, and arranged ration and drinking water for affected families, the ministry said. Bastar MP Mahesh Kashyap appreciated the company’s support and said it had responded promptly to the administration’s appeal and played a vital role in assisting affected communities.

Key Facts

  • Relief: about 1,000 tarpaulins (18×24 ft)
  • Distributed so far: 200 on 28 Oct, 200 on 29 Oct
  • Still to come: 600
  • Flood rescue: 4 speed boats provided by NMDC
  • Area: villages along the Indravati river, Bastar

NMDC tarpaulins: where they are going

The first 200 tarpaulins were distributed on 28 October in Krishpal village of Bastar Janpad Panchayat by Kashyap and Pramod Kumar, Executive Director and Head of the NMDC Steel Plant at Nagarnar. The floods struck in September, more than a month before the distribution began. Another 200 were handed out on 29 October in Bade Chakwa Gram Panchayat and Ghatganoura village. Distribution of the remaining 600 is planned to cover other affected families. Kumar said the people of Bastar had shown remarkable courage in facing the disaster and were now rebuilding their lives, and that NMDC considered it a matter of pride to contribute to the rehabilitation process and help restore normalcy in the region.

Indravati river and relief in Chhattisgarh

The Indravati flows through the Bastar region of southern Chhattisgarh. The river rises in Odisha and flows west through Bastar before joining the Godavari, and Jagdalpur, the district headquarters, lies on its banks. NMDC is India’s largest iron ore producer and runs the steel plant at Nagarnar near Jagdalpur; the relief update was issued through the Ministry of Mines. A janpad panchayat is the block-level tier of rural local government in Chhattisgarh. Each tarpaulin measures 18 by 24 feet, roughly 5.5 by 7.3 metres, enough to cover a damaged roof or make a temporary shelter. The ministry said NMDC’s continued help forms part of its commitment to provide immediate support to flood-affected families and help them rebuild as early as possible. The release did not give a total number of damaged houses or affected families, and TrendDesh has not reported any such figure. Families who have not yet received help should contact the Bastar district administration, which is leading relief and rehabilitation.

Why It Matters: Families whose mud homes were damaged need shelter before winter, and the tarpaulins are a stop-gap until houses are rebuilt.
