He checked arrangements for electricity, drinking water, cleanliness and security at the booths, the release said, and spoke with voters about the facilities and the voting process. He thanked voters for strengthening the country’s democratic tradition by taking part. A separate DIPR release said polling parties for the eight panchayat samitis left for their polling stations on 21 October. It said a reserve assistant polling officer from Chomu who went missing without notice from 22 October has been suspended, and that charge sheets will be issued to other staff who skipped polling duty. Mr Nayak said a list of staff who were absent when polling parties left Bhawani Niketan Pharmacy College on 21 October is also being prepared. The release said such absent staff could also face cases under Section 134(1A) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The Chomu reserve polling parties had been housed at Mahatma Gandhi Government School, Radhaswamibagh, according to the returning officer’s report.

Third phase: 476 nominations and 3 November polling

The district is also preparing for the third phase. DIPR said 476 nomination papers from 418 candidates were filed over four days for panchayat samiti member posts in 77 wards of Chaksu, Kotkhawda, Madhorajpura, Phagi and Sanganer panchayat samitis. Scrutiny was scheduled for 24 October, and candidates can withdraw until 3 pm on 26 October, after which symbols will be allotted and the final list of candidates issued. Polling parties for this phase will leave on 2 November, and voting for zila parishad and panchayat samiti member posts will be held on 3 November from 7 am to 6 pm, according to the district election office.
