Dragonfly rotorcraft completes first simulated Titan flight in NASA test

NASA’s Dragonfly rotorcraft has completed its first full simulated flight on flight-like computers, the most comprehensive test so far of how it will fly on Saturn’s moon Titan, NASA said in an update dated 23 October 2026.

How the Dragonfly test worked

The test ran in real time on a computer testbed at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, where the rotorcraft is being integrated and tested. In the simulation, Dragonfly separated from its protective backshell, flew on its own over Titan’s sand dunes, scanned the ground for a safe place to land, turned, descended and touched down. NASA said the test included most of the systems and manoeuvres the rotorcraft will use when it reaches Titan in 2034. It combined flight software and avionics with simulated input from the sensors Dragonfly will carry, including newly installed navigation cameras, inertial measurement units and a lidar system. NASA described it as a successful first flight, but one that happened on a computer testbed rather than on Titan itself.

Key Facts

  • Mission: Dragonfly rotorcraft lander to Titan
  • Test: first full simulated flight on flight-like avionics at Johns Hopkins APL
  • Launch: no earlier than 2028
  • Arrival at Titan: 2034, after a six-year cruise
  • Science phase: about three years of flights

“The cool thing about first flight is that it's our most challenging flight.”

— Zach Putnam, Dragonfly mobility lead, Johns Hopkins APL

Why the first flight on Titan is the hardest

“The cool thing about first flight is that it’s our most challenging flight,” said Zach Putnam, Dragonfly mobility subsystem lead engineer at APL. “It uses every piece of flight sensor hardware on the lander.” The team has built up flight capability step by step, NASA said, starting with simple activities such as spinning a single rotor, then a short reposition flight and a partial scouting flight, adding sensors at each stage. Adding lidar, which Dragonfly will use to measure terrain height and slope and spot hazards, provided the final piece needed to fully simulate what the rotorcraft will meet on Titan. “Doing it incrementally is what enabled us to build these tests at all,” Putnam said.

Dragonfly launch and mission plan

Dragonfly is scheduled to launch no earlier than 2028 on a six-year journey to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, NASA said. Once there, it will spend three years flying from place to place to study the chemistry, geology and atmosphere of what NASA calls an Earthlike moon, with the aim of improving understanding of the chemical origins of life. Unlike rovers that drive across a surface, Dragonfly is a lander that flies, so it can cover much more ground and reach very different sites. In August, a technician installed one of its two navigation cameras in an APL cleanroom, according to NASA, part of the hardware now feeding these flight tests. The navigation camera installation took place at APL, where Dragonfly is being integrated and tested, NASA said.

Why It Matters: Dragonfly will be the first flying lander on another world in the outer solar system, and Titan may hold clues to how life's building blocks formed.
