CHAPEA crew to leave NASA’s simulated Mars habitat on 31 October after 378 days in isolation

Editor's note: TrendDesh reported on CHAPEA Mission 2 reaching one year in isolation earlier this month. This report adds NASA's announcement of the crew's exit date.

The four volunteers of NASA’s CHAPEA Mission 2 will leave their simulated Mars habitat on Saturday, 31 October 2026, after 378 days of isolation at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, NASA said in a media advisory on Tuesday.

Who is in the CHAPEA Mission 2 crew

The crew members are Ross Elder, Ellen Ellis, James Spicer and Matthew Montgomery. The mission began on 19 October 2025, and since then the four have lived and worked inside a 3D-printed, 1,700-square-foot facility, according to NASA. They have simulated Mars mission operations, carried out simulated spacewalks, exercised, maintained the habitat and grown plants, while working under stresses future deep space crews are likely to face, including communication delays, limited resources and isolation. CHAPEA stands for Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog. Ross Elder is the mission commander, Ellen Ellis the medical officer, Matthew Montgomery the science officer and James Spicer the flight engineer, NASA said earlier this month.

Key Facts

  • Mission: CHAPEA Mission 2, NASA Johnson, Houston
  • Crew: Ross Elder, Ellen Ellis, James Spicer, Matthew Montgomery
  • Start: 19 Oct 2025; exit: 31 Oct 2026
  • Duration: 378 days in isolation
  • Habitat: 3D-printed, 1,700 sq ft

How NASA will cover the exit

NASA will stream the crew’s departure from the habitat live from 3 pm EDT on 31 October, which is 12:30 am IST on 1 November, on NASA Johnson’s YouTube and social media accounts. Johnson Space Center Director Vanessa Wyche and NASA astronaut Jack Hathaway will speak, as will the four crew members. Media will be able to watch the ceremony on a screen outside the hangar that holds the facility and to capture the moment the crew steps outside for the first time in more than a year, NASA said. Reporters wishing to attend in person or to speak with the crew virtually in the following days have been asked to contact the Johnson newsroom by 2 pm on Friday, 30 October.

Why the Mars simulation matters for Artemis

NASA said health and performance data gathered during the simulation can help it develop ways to counter the risks of human spaceflight for future Artemis and Moon Base missions. The data can help optimise food system design, the use of crew time and bandwidth on NASA’s Deep Space Network, among other aspects of living in deep space. It can also help flight doctors and psychologists strengthen medical care and behavioural support practices so that crews stay ready and perform well, the agency said. NASA did not release any results from the mission in the advisory; findings are usually published after the data has been analysed. After leaving the habitat, the crew will spend about two weeks on post-mission evaluations and debriefs with NASA scientists, the agency said when the mission marked one year. The simulation included communication delays of up to 45 minutes each way, similar to what a real Mars crew would face.

Why It Matters: Long-duration isolation studies feed directly into planning for crewed Moon and Mars missions, including food, medical care and mental health support.
