Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel: what Srishti will do

The ship was launched by Sandeepa Sahay in the presence of Vishvajit Sahay, Secretary (Defence Finance), with senior officers of the Navy, the Ministry of Defence and the shipyard present. The indigenously designed and built ships will add to the Navy’s existing offshore patrol vessels for maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and anti-piracy missions, the ministry said. The vessels are being built at two shipyards at the same time: Goa Shipyard and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. The ships take their names from Indian heritage; Srishti means “creation” in Sanskrit. According to the ministry, the launch event reflected the traditions and ethos of the Indian Navy.

He praised the armed forces, especially the Navy, for leading the effort and congratulated Goa Shipyard. Sullage barge launched at an MSME shipyard in Thane

A day earlier, on 26 October, the first sullage barge (Yard 142) was launched, and keels were laid for the third sullage barge (Yard 144) and the first bottom opening dumb barge (Yard 148), at Suryadipta Projects Pvt Ltd, an MSME shipyard in Thane, another PIB release said. Rear Admiral Kapil Mehta, Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, was the chief guest. Contracts for four 300-tonne sullage barges and three bottom opening dumb barges were signed with the shipyard in November 2024 and January 2026. The barges, designed and built with an Indian ship design firm and the Indian Register of Shipping, will support Navy operations and help meet MARPOL pollution rules, the ministry said. The barges were built in collaboration with an Indian ship design firm and the Indian Register of Shipping respectively, and the ministry called them flag bearers of the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Sullage barges collect waste water from ships in harbour, which helps vessels avoid discharging it at sea.

Why It Matters: More home-built patrol ships let the Navy cover India's long coastline and offshore assets without relying on imports.
