Who attended the Narmada Control Authority meeting

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended virtually along with senior officials, according to the release. Mr Paatil said new forms of inter-state water cooperation had been built to settle issues pending for years. He said the agreement reached in New Delhi on 7 July 2026 in the presence of the chief ministers of the four states is being implemented effectively, and that decades-old water agreements had taken shape through consensus, coordination and trust. The release said the four states had taken steps under the Narmada project in the spirit of cooperative federalism. The Narmada Control Authority is the inter-state body set up to implement the tribunal’s award for sharing Narmada waters among Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Rajasthan plans storage for surplus monsoon water

Mr Sharma told the meeting that the state government is working to use the surplus water available during the monsoon under the 1979 award of the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared to store this surplus water, he said, so that extra water that now goes to waste in the monsoon can meet rising demand in water-scarce parts of the state. He also referred to the Ramjal Setu Link Project and the Yamuna water agreement as pacts that have brought hope to dry regions, and thanked the Union minister and the governments of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra for their cooperation. A Hindi version of the DIPR release carries the same figures and statements.

Sprinkler irrigation in Jalore and Barmer

The Chief Minister said Rajasthan has built a model of water efficiency under the Narmada Canal Project by making sprinkler irrigation mandatory across the entire command area, reaching remote parts of Jalore and Barmer districts. Because of this micro-irrigation method, water wastage has become negligible, he said, and the target of 40 per cent irrigation intensity across 2.46 lakh hectares of cultivable command area is being met, raising crop yields. In a desert state, he said, water is the lifeline of development, agriculture, animal husbandry and public life, and drinking and irrigation water for western Rajasthan remains among the government’s top priorities. The DIPR release did not give a cost or timeline for the planned storage project.

Why It Matters: Narmada water is a lifeline for Jalore and Barmer; storing surplus monsoon flows could ease shortages in western Rajasthan.
