Khet Bachao Abhiyan Rabi 2026 starts today: what the farm campaign will cover until 30 November

The Union Agriculture Ministry launches the nationwide Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Rabi 2026 today, 22 October, with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan flagging it off from Karnal in Haryana, the ministry said through PIB. The campaign runs until 30 November 2026.

What the Khet Bachao Abhiyan will promote

The campaign aims to make farmers aware of balanced and judicious use of fertilisers and other inputs based on soil testing, the ministry said. It will push crop diversification through the oilseed, pulse and horticulture missions, better use of fields left fallow after the paddy harvest, and proper crop residue management. Farmers will be trained in the right use of organic and bio-based products, and natural farming will be promoted through awareness sessions and field demonstrations. Water conservation, rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge are also on the list, along with awareness on fertilisers including green ammonia and biological products, intercropping, integrated pest management and regenerative agriculture. It will also stress water-use efficiency, seed distribution and the adoption of resource-efficient, climate-resilient farming, along with capacity building and farm mechanisation, the ministry said.

Key Facts

  • Campaign: Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Rabi 2026
  • Dates: 22 October to 30 November 2026
  • Launch: Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Karnal, Haryana
  • Focus: soil-test-based fertiliser use, crop diversification, residue management
  • Also: Farmer IDs, PMFBY awareness, KCC saturation

Schemes, soil health and who will take part

The campaign will help create Farmer IDs, raise awareness of crop insurance under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), expand Kisan Credit Card coverage through saturation drives, and share information on opportunities from trade agreements, the ministry said. Farmers’ conferences, Kisan Chaupals, training sessions and field demonstrations will be held at state, district, block and gram panchayat levels. State agriculture departments, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, ICAR institutes, state agricultural universities and ATMA will work together with scientists, farmer producer organisations, cooperatives and self-help groups. Local-language material, radio, Doordarshan and social media will be used for outreach. The campaign is meant to strengthen the link between agricultural research and field-level extension so farmers can make informed decisions and cut avoidable input costs, PIB Raipur said.

Krishi Vigyan Kendra Bemetara joins in Chhattisgarh

In Chhattisgarh, ICAR’s National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (ICAR-NIBSM), Raipur, will work with Krishi Vigyan Kendra Bemetara under the campaign, PIB Raipur said. Institute director Dr. P. K. Rai stressed scientific, location-specific practices to keep soil fertile and use resources efficiently. Joint director Dr. Pankaj Sharma, the nodal officer, said scientists would give farmers technical guidance and training. The local drive will focus on General Fertiliser Recommendations, Integrated Nutrient Management, residue management without burning, soil moisture conservation, and more pulse and oilseed production on rice-fallow land. Farmers in Bemetara will also be told about relevant government schemes and sustainable technologies suited to local conditions, and the campaign is expected to improve soil health and make farming more resilient to climate-related challenges.

Why It Matters: Rabi sowing decisions made in the next few weeks shape fertiliser use and stubble management across north India, so a field-level campaign now can affect costs, soil health and air quality.
