Jaipur food safety team finds 7-8-year-old stock

The action was taken under the state’s “Shuddh Aahar – Milawat Par Vaar” (pure food, war on adulteration) campaign, the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) said. During an inspection of the Jhotwara cold storage warehouse, the central food safety team found raisins and walnuts that were about seven to eight years old. Representatives of the firms linked to the stock were called to the site, and with their consent 3,180 kg of spoiled raisins and 480 packets of walnuts were destroyed. DIPR said the aim was to stop spoiled food that is unfit for human consumption from reaching the market. Jhotwara is an industrial area on the north-western side of Jaipur.

Black pepper seized in Jhotwara on adulteration suspicion

In a separate action, the team took a sample of black pepper from a trading firm under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Because adulteration was suspected, 1,018 kg of black pepper was seized. Further action will be taken under the rules once the laboratory report on the sample arrives, DIPR said. TrendDesh is not naming the firm because the pepper has not yet been found adulterated. The raids were carried out on the instructions of Commissioner of Food Safety and Drug Control Avichal Chaturvedi, with guidance from Additional Commissioner Bhagwat Singh and supervision by Joint Commissioner V P Sharma. Food samples taken under the Act are tested in a food laboratory, and the report decides whether a product is safe, substandard or unsafe. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, selling unsafe food is a punishable offence.

Food adulteration campaign: what the department says

The food safety department said providing safe, good-quality food to the public is its priority, and that inspections and action against poor storage, adulteration and breaches of food safety standards are continuing. It appealed to food businesses to ensure quality, safe storage and compliance with the prescribed standards. The campaign runs under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar, and under the direction of Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Gayatri Rathore, DIPR said. Consumers who suspect adulteration can raise complaints with the state food safety department. Consumers can also file complaints through FSSAI’s Food Safety Connect app.

Why It Matters: Old dry fruit and adulterated spices can reach shops in the festive season, so checks at cold stores help protect consumers.
