HIV and mucormycosis sessions on infectious diseases

Expert sessions covered key areas of infectious disease care. Dr Milind Bhushandi spoke on HIV primary care and recent advances, while Dr Bharat Rathod discussed pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV prevention. Dr Ashwini Tayde lectured on invasive fungal infections, including mucormycosis. Dr Neeta Gade explained the role of microbiology in diagnosing infections and guiding clinical decisions. Dr Kumbhalkar, Dr Khot and Dr Amol Dube discussed challenging cases seen at AIIMS Nagpur, including uncommon presentations and rare clinical scenarios. The programme also featured case presentations and poster discussions. PrEP refers to medicines taken before a possible exposure to HIV to prevent infection, while PEP is a short course started soon after a possible exposure. Mucormycosis, sometimes called black fungus, drew wide attention in India during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Quiz winners from Vidarbha medical colleges

A postgraduate medicine quiz drew teams from nine medical colleges across Vidarbha. Government Medical College, Chandrapur, won first place and AIIMS Nagpur came second, the ministry said. Dr Ishan Verma, Dr Onkar Awadhiya and Dr Amruta Bagul designed the quiz, and Dr Preetam Salukhe gave the vote of thanks. Faculty of the Department of General Medicine contributed to the sessions. Such CME programmes help practising doctors and postgraduate students keep up with changes in the diagnosis and treatment of infections. Dr Salukhe thanked the dignitaries, speakers, faculty, organisers and participants for their contributions. The ministry said the programme fostered academic exchange and evidence-based clinical learning. AIIMS Nagpur is one of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences set up by the Union government.

Why It Matters: Infections such as HIV and fungal diseases need up-to-date clinical skills, and regional CMEs help doctors in Vidarbha keep pace.
