Cyclone Arnab has weakened into a deep depression after crossing the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its national bulletin issued at 3 am on Thursday, 29 October 2026. IMD expects it to weaken further into a depression by Thursday morning.

Where Cyclone Arnab crossed the coast

IMD’s hourly bulletin issued on Wednesday afternoon confirmed that Arnab crossed the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts to the southwest of Yanam between 2 am and 8 am IST on 28 October as a very severe cyclonic storm. Its maximum sustained wind speed at the time was 125-135 kmph, gusting to 150 kmph. IMD placed the crossing point about 20 km east-northeast of Narsapur, 40 km southwest of Yanam and 60 km southwest of Kakinada. By 12.30 pm on Wednesday, the system had weakened into a severe cyclonic storm with winds of 95-105 kmph, and IMD said it would continue to weaken as it moved inland.

IMD deep depression bulletin and heavy rainfall warning

At 11.30 pm on Wednesday, the deep depression lay over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining south Odisha, south Chhattisgarh and northeast Telangana, about 60 km south of Malkangiri in Odisha and 140 km south of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh. It had moved nearly northwards at 15 kmph during the previous six hours. IMD expects it to become a well-marked low pressure area by Thursday evening. The department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Jharkhand and East Uttar Pradesh on 29 October, and at a few places over north Chhattisgarh. Bihar may get heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places on 29 and 30 October. Squally winds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph were forecast over coastal Andhra districts till Thursday morning, and fishermen have been told not to venture into the west-central Bay of Bengal till Thursday noon.

NHAI clears highways in Andhra Pradesh

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said it had deployed 32 route-patrolling vehicles, 31 ambulances, 35 cranes and tow-away vehicles, 47 JCBs and 24 quick response teams on national highway stretches between Eluru and Srikakulam districts. At least 149 fallen trees had been cleared, and about 1,350 potholes were reported or identified for temporary repair. Waterlogging was reported at several locations on NH-16 and NH-516C. Brief traffic interruptions on NH-16, including near Anakapalli, Yelamanchili and Gajuwaka, were cleared and traffic restored, NHAI said. Consolidated official figures on damage and casualties were not available to TrendDesh at the time of publishing, so none are reported here.

Why It Matters: The weakening system will still bring heavy rain to Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar and east Uttar Pradesh, so residents should follow IMD and local advisories.
