INS Trishul's passage exercise with Italy

Before entering harbour, INS Trishul carried out a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with the Italian Naval Ship Carlo Margottini, PIB said. The drills covered coordinated manoeuvring, communication procedures, replenishment approaches, cross-deck landings, personnel transfers and boarding operations. A PASSEX is a short exercise that navies hold when their ships meet at sea or before a port visit, to practise working together. According to the ministry, this one allowed the two navies to exchange best practices and improve operational synergy. The release did not give the exact location of the exercise or how long it lasted.

Key Facts

  • Ship: INS Trishul, Indian Navy
  • Port: Civitavecchia, Italy
  • Arrived: 25 October 2026
  • Exercise: PASSEX with Italian ship Carlo Margottini
  • Earlier stop: Lisbon, Portugal (ended 21 October)

What the Indian Navy has planned in port

During the stay at Civitavecchia, professional interactions, cultural visits and exchanges are scheduled, and the ship will be open to visitors so that people can learn about the Indian Navy’s maritime traditions and capabilities. The ministry said the port call underlines the long maritime partnership between India and Italy and the commitment of both navies to closer professional links and operational cooperation. Civitavecchia is a port on Italy’s Tyrrhenian Sea coast that serves the Rome region. The release did not say how many days the ship will spend in Italy or which port it will visit next. The ministry said the Italian visit, like the earlier one, is meant to deepen professional links between the two navies.

From Lisbon to the Mediterranean

The Italy visit comes days after an earlier stop on the same deployment. In a release dated 23 October, the ministry said INS Trishul had concluded a port call at Lisbon in Portugal on 21 October. There, the ship’s commanding officer called on the Commander of the Portuguese Navy, and the ship was opened to visitors including members of the Indian diaspora and Portuguese naval personnel. India’s Ambassador to Portugal, Puneet R Kundal, also visited the ship and met the crew, and a cultural event was held on board. Officers of the Portuguese and Brazilian navies, other envoys and Rear Admiral Paulo Silva Pereira, Deputy Fleet Commander of the Portuguese Navy, attended that event, the ministry said. It described the Lisbon visit as part of INS Trishul’s overseas deployment that reinforced India’s commitment to maritime cooperation with friendly navies. Together, the two stops show the Navy using one deployment to build ties with several European navies.

Why It Matters: Port calls and joint drills help the Indian Navy work smoothly with partner navies, which matters for safety at sea and for India's growing presence beyond the Indian Ocean.
