Swavlamban 2026, the fifth edition of the Indian Navy’s flagship Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Seminar, will be held on 26 and 27 October 2026 at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, the Ministry of Defence said. Vice Chief of the Naval Staff Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar chaired the curtain-raiser press conference in New Delhi on 19 October.

What Swavlamban 2026 will showcase

The seminar, run by the Navy’s Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO), aims to turn indigenous technological innovation into operational capability and strengthen Aatmanirbharta, or self-reliance. It will bring together innovators, industry partners, start-ups, MSMEs, academia, investors and the armed forces to look for joint answers to emerging maritime security challenges. The exhibition will be organised by theme and will show indigenous innovations that have become success stories. Areas listed by the ministry include maritime surveillance, Counter-UAS (counter-drone) systems, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies, NBCD (nuclear, biological and chemical defence and damage control), and safety and efficiency enhancers.

Indian Navy priorities set out by the Vice Chief

Addressing the media, Vice Admiral Kochhar said Swavlamban has, since 2022, connected the Navy’s operational needs with the technological capabilities of Indian industry and academia. Pointing to the changing character of modern warfare, he stressed the need to develop niche technologies into systems that can be deployed at sea. For a Navy that operates across long distances and undertakes prolonged deployments, durable indigenous technology matters for combat readiness, operational flexibility and steady capability growth, he said. The ministry said the seminar will offer a platform to discuss future and emerging technologies that could transform naval operations and strengthen India’s maritime capabilities.

Investors, iDEX panels and new documents

Engagements with venture capitalists and investors will be a key part of the seminar, with discussions on funding, scaling promising firms and commercialising indigenous technology. A panel with small and medium enterprises will hold sessions on self-reliance and on strengthening the iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) ecosystem to build resilient supply chains, encourage academic entrepreneurship and highlight start-up journeys. The event will also see the release of the Swavlamban 5.0 document, a Compendium on Technology Imperatives, and the Naval Unified Systems, Ethernet and Tactical Utilisation (NAUSETU) Interface Standards. The ministry said the aim is a future-ready force whose technology goals match the needs of modern warfare. The first Swavlamban seminar was held in New Delhi on 18 and 19 July 2022, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the SPRINT Challenges, a joint NIIO and Defence Innovation Organisation effort to induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies or products into the Navy, PIB said at the time.

Why It Matters: Swavlamban is where the Navy tells Indian start-ups and MSMEs what it needs, and where firms pitch homegrown systems. Counter-drone and surveillance tools are now urgent needs at sea.
