Who opened the workshop on plastic engineering in agriculture

The three-day meeting runs from 26 to 28 October at the college, which is part of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal. Dr Rajbir Singh, Deputy Director General (Engineering) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), was chief guest, and Dr P. S. Chauhan, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Karan Narendra Agriculture University (SKNAU), Jobner, in Rajasthan, was guest of honour. Dr T. R. Sharma, Director of Research at CAU Imphal, attended as special guest. Dr K. Narsaiah, Assistant Director General (Process Engineering) at ICAR, and Dr Nachiket Kotwaliwale, Director of ICAR-CIPHET, Ludhiana, co-chaired the inaugural session. Prof. N. S. Chauhan, Dean of CAEPHT, welcomed the guests and delegates.

Protected cultivation and water management on the agenda

Dr Rakesh Sharda, Project Coordinator of the AICRP on PEASEM at ICAR-CIPHET, Ludhiana, presented the coordinator’s report on the progress and research achievements of the project. Farmers were also given a chance to share their views on how agricultural engineering technologies work in the field, according to the release. Dr T. B. S. Rajput, former Project Director of the Water Technology Centre at ICAR-IARI, New Delhi, and Dr Pitam Chandra, former Director of ICAR-CIAE, Bhopal, addressed the session. Speakers stressed research, innovation and coordinated effort in using plastics for protected cultivation, efficient water management, farm structures and sustainable production systems.

What the three-day ICAR meet will review

PIB said the workshop is a national platform to review the performance of participating centres, share research experience, find technology gaps and set future research priorities. Special emphasis is on location-specific technologies, better use of resources, and engineering steps that can raise farm productivity and profit while protecting the environment. Over the three days, scientists from ICAR institutes and state agricultural universities will present results, discuss new project proposals and plan future programmes. Technical sessions, industry presentations, discussions on administrative and financial matters, and field and laboratory visits are also planned. The organisers hope the talks will help develop affordable, farmer-friendly technologies suited to India’s different agro-climatic regions, including the North Eastern Himalayan region. The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Deepak Jhajharia, Principal Investigator of the project at CAEPHT. The workshop is hosted by CAEPHT under the aegis of ICAR-CIPHET, Ludhiana, and the inaugural programme began with the lighting of the lamp, the National Song and the ICAR Song.

Why It Matters: Plastic mulches, greenhouses, pipes and lined ponds can help farmers save water and grow crops in tough climates, and this project tests what works in different regions.
